The bulk of this listing was taken from a 25th Anniversary LP, ABCH-731 by ABC. We have added a few later albums, including the original source.
Ray Charles Robinson was born on September 23rd, 1932, in Albany,
Georgia. Six years later, when the Charles family was living in Greenville,
Florida, he became completely blind, without hope of recovery. Placed in the
St. Augustine School for the Blind, he learned to read braille, to play piano
and clarinet, and to memorize music. Both his parents died when he was still a
teenager, and after leaving the St. Augustine School he traveled through the
South playing the piano, clarinet and saxophone in small bands. "I
realized I had a choice of getting a cane, a cup and picking out a street
corner," he once told an interviewer, "or striding out as a
musician." His decision followed naturally from the philosophy he
expounded years later to Chris Roberts in the British Melody Maker:
"People should never be bitter about anything. They should go out into the
world and learn to keep fighting for themselves." With or without sight!
"I used to sing like Charles Brown and King Cole because they were
making money," he said some years ago. "I wanted to make money too.
So I tried to copy them. But that wasn't the real me. I was just
pretending." Some years ago, a powerful and successful promotion fastened
the label "Genius" on Ray Charles. He didn't like it. "I don't
go for that," he told an interviewer. "Art Tatum—he was a genius. And
Einstein. Not me." "Soul," of recent years, has also been a
much-abused word. It has come, half humorously, to be regarded as an adjective
peculiarly applicable to the American Negro, his food, music and brethren. In a
larger sense, it is singularly appropriate to Charles's music, in which his
soul is so frequently laid bare. "I try to bring out my soul so people can
understand what I am," he once said. "I want people to feel my
soul."
In a Life feature story (29 July, 1966), he expanded on the contemporary
meaning of "soul":
"Soul is when you can take a song," he said, "and make it
part of you — a part that's so true, so real, people think it-must have
happened to you. I'm not satisfied unless I can make them feel what I
feel."
This sequence is a chronologically arranged series for automatic
changer. However, the enjoyment is equal when played in any order.
